It was just an idea

What if you made a case that was built on design and function, rather than flair and fanfare? That is what created Fractal Design: one single idea being sold one order at a time, all over Europe. The keyword here is “idea”, because this was before even a single prototype existed. Many said no thanks, but more than enough said “yes” to take us confidently from napkin sketches all the way to mass production.

Fast forward

We’ll skip ahead here. Because while the differences between models are interesting and noteworthy in themselves, the broad strokes paint a clear picture of our first ten years. The forces that drives us are still the same. We’re reinventing, rediscovering and developing as we go, but we always stay true to the same guidelines.

Meet our makers

Do you want to know the truth about our designers? For the most part they’re stubborn, childish and unreasonably optimistic. This is probably the biggest secret behind our success. It’s because of exactly that dedication, imagination and patience that our cases, fans and power supplies have gone on to create new gold standards and continue to impress users and reviewers worldwide.

The passionate and the obsessed…

While we certainly enjoy making fun of them (and always blame them when the coffee-pot is empty), the PD department is the heart and soul of any company like ours. Meticulous, unrelenting and excruciatingly precise, it’s their job to dream up new solutions, consider every angle, find out why something can’t be done, deconstruct it and prove themselves wrong (and therefore, right). Their quest for perfection often forces us to think bigger and craft brand new components to meet extremely specific hardware needs.

…who only stop to start again

It can take anywhere from six to eighteen months for a new Fractal Design product to go from early sketches to mass production. And the only way to end up with something truly successful, is to be just as (if not more) demanding, picky and detail-oriented as everyone in the target-group. And once you get there, and all the pieces are in place – the reward is that you get to start over from a clean slate, trying to outdo yourself again.

Design comes first

Full functionality and aesthetic appeal – it all comes down to the same thing: diligent design. We don’t concern ourselves with if one aspect is more important than the other. From the first genesis of an idea all the way through to the finished product, the design needs to be as thought-through as it is attractive.

You need to be able to trust your hardware to stand the test of time. That’s why a solid build and durability is so important to us. And it’s also why our support team won’t stop when the warranty does. We stand by our products for as long as you care to use them, and as long as we have spare parts to ship.

There’s always a point to the choices we make, a reason behind every included feature. It’s important to us that a Fractal case is bigger than the sum of its parts, that it makes sense as a whole.
